We envision creating a globally connected learning ecosystem that delivers value-based quality education and fosters cutting-edge research. It provides consultancy to industries and government bodies and addresses diverse socio-economic challenges at both regional and national levels.

Mission of the Department

Our mission is to serve as a catalyst in developing well-trained economists through the provision of high-quality education that encompasses all major fields of economics. With a well-structured curriculum integrating both theoretical and empirical dimensions, we strive to prepare our students for successful careers in academia, the corporate sector, and public policy leadership—both in India and abroad.

Message from the Head of the Department

Greetings!

The Department of Economics offers a four-year B.A. (Hons), a two-year Post-graduation, and Ph.D. programmes in Economics. These are taught by a team of competent and passionate faculty members whose commitment to teaching and research forms the cornerstone of the Department’s success.

We are dedicated to providing a comprehensive and dynamic learning environment that enables students to gain an in-depth understanding of economic concepts, theories, and practical applications. Our curriculum is deeply connected to real-world contexts through extensive fieldwork, collaborations with consultancy agencies and NGOs, and practical exposure.

Our Department emphasizes both primary and secondary data-driven research, applying advanced econometric and statistical models to produce impactful findings. The consistent publication of faculty and research scholars in reputed academic journals stands as a testament to our research excellence.

We are equipped with a state-of-the-art research and computer centre, as well as a well-resourced library. A unique initiative—the newly established Knowledge Hub—has become a focal point for students preparing for competitive exams like UGC-JRF and IES. This hub offers access to soft and hard copies of academic resources and curated video content across various subjects.

What sets us apart is the unwavering dedication of our faculty members. They not only organize academic events like conferences, workshops, and special lectures but also provide individual mentorship to ensure that students grasp conceptual foundations and gain hands-on experience with analytical software tools.

Officers & Staffs

The Department is housed in the School of Management building with spacious air conditioned classrooms. All classrooms are Wi-Fi enabled and fitted with large LED screens for effective classroom teaching using ICT tools. The department also has a well-equipped computing lab with access to large number of e-resources like journals and databases subscribed by the University library in order to supplement classroom teaching along with research at all levels.

Every year a good number of students from the Department qualify for UGC-NET/JRF, SLET and GATE examinations. Besides, students have also done exceptionally well in GRE, IELTS etc.
Alumni of the Department are employed as faculty members in various Central Universities, IITs, IIMs and other reputed educational institutions across the world; as executives/managers in multinational companies and banks, and also in various government services through UPSC and state PSCs. Many of the students of our Department are pursuing Ph.D. with fellowships in IIMs, IITs, other Central Universities and reputed institutes of higher learning in economics such as JNU, New Delhi; IIT Delhi; IIT Madras; IIM Kozhikode; CDS, Trivandrum; ISEC, Bangalore; IIPS and TISS, Mumbai; IFMR, MIDS and MSE, Chennai, etc. Students pursuing their Postgraduate programme have also interned at various corporate firms and research institutes such as PwC, New Indian Express, IHD, IIMAD,NIPFP, IIT Bhubaneswar to name a few.
