Welcome to the Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences!

The Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences  is one of oldest departments of the Pondicherry University established on 1 July 1987. The department’s vision is to become a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in ecological research, environmental education, and sustainable solutions. This vision reflects the department’s aspiration to contribute significantly to the understanding and conservation of ecosystems and wildlife, the promotion of environmental stewardship, and the development of innovative approaches to address environmental challenges. By cultivating a culture of excellence, collaboration, and engagement, the department aims to produce graduates who are well equipped to make meaningful contributions to the field of ecology, conservation biology and environmental sciences.

We provide a rigorous and comprehensive education in ecology and environmental sciences, foster cutting-edge research and innovation, and promote environmental sustainability through partnerships and outreach. The department is committed to nurturing a learning environment that emphasizes critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and interdisciplinary approaches. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical skills, the department prepares students to address complex ecological and environmental issues effectively.

Curricula of MSc Ecology and MSc Environmental Sciences courses have been meticulously developed and implemented to address the pressing local, national, regional, and global developmental needs. These programs are designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and expertise to tackle the complex challenges faced by our environment and contribute to sustainable development.

Officers & Staffs

Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) is available in the Pondicherry University to strengthen technological infrastructure to carry out advanced research in various science disciplines under one roof and make their services available to academic schools and departments. CIF is housed with various sophisticated equipment. Further the department has well equipped laboratory with sophisticated equipment such as Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Skalar Auto Analyzer; UV Spectrophotometer, Gel-apparatus, Cooling high speed Centrifuge, FTIR Stereoscopic microscopes and Flame photometer, etc. Field equipment including camera traps, binoculars, GPS, Range Finders, etc are available for field-oriented classes.

Eco-remediation; Climate Change and Sustainability.

Alumni of the Department have been working as scientists, teachers, professionals, etc in various organizations in India as well as abroad contributing towards conservation of biodiversity and sustainability. Further, department provides advisory roles and technical inputs to various national and international institutions to strengthen biodiversity research and conservation (e.g. DST-SERB, MoEF&CC, WII, ZSI, iCED, UNEP-CMS, UNEP-CBD, IUCN, State Forest Departments, etc).

Our alumni are placed in various renowned research institutions and Universities in India and abroad, Government Organizations and NGOs. Department is offer internships to other students to complete their short-term dissertation works especially for post-graduate students.
