Message from the Head of the Department:

Welcome to the Department of Anthropology at Pondicherry University. The department is committed to academic excellence, research innovation, and the overall development of our students. We strive to create a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that empowers students to reach their full potential while contributing meaningfully to their field and society at large.

Our faculty members are not only dedicated educators but also active researchers and professionals who bring real-world insights into the classroom, working together towards continued growth and excellence. We emphasize a curriculum that is holistic, academically rigorous and relevant, preparing our graduates to excel in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Keeping in view the holistic perspective of the discipline, the course curriculum is designed in such a way that equal emphasis is laid on Social-Cultural, Physical and Archaeological anthropology. However, most of our research activities are focused on Social-Cultural, Ecological, and Medical Anthropology.
Major research projects were received from the University Grants Commission, the Indian Council of Social Science Research, the Indian Council of Medical Research, etc.
Students of the Department find placement in Anthropological Survey of India, Social and Tribal Welfare departments and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO).

The PG-IV semester students undergo an intensive, rigorous field training lasting three to four weeks, during which students engage in teacher-guided fieldwork as part of the curriculum. This is compulsory for all students. This experience allows them to apply and evaluate anthropological approaches, concepts, and methods in real-world settings. Each student is assigned a designated supervisor who guides them throughout the process. Following the completion of their fieldwork, students are required to submit a dissertation that reflects their research and findings, which is essential for obtaining a Master’s degree in Anthropology.
