Vision and Message of Head of Department

Dr. Gadi Padmavati

Professor

Pondicherry University, specifically its Department of Ocean Studies and Marine Biology, established a Marine Biology course in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to study marine ecosystems and resources. This includes research in coral reefs, mangrove ecosystems, and island environments, with a focus on understanding and managing these fragile ecosystems. The department offers both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Marine Biology. The Port Blair campus is situated in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, providing a unique environment for studying marine biology and coastal ecosystems. The course and research focus on the study of oligotrophic waters, which are characterized by low nutrient levels and high water clarity, common in reef environments. The department offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Marine Biology, providing students with in-depth knowledge and training in the field. A key goal of the program is to develop strategies for sustainable management and conservation of marine resources, including coral reefs and coastal ecosystems. This department’s research has gained international recognition, as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and collaborations with other research institutions.

The establishment of a remote island campus in the Andaman Islands, focused on advanced Marine Science, has been a significant success, producing over 700 M.Sc. and 73 Ph.D. graduates in 23 years. The department also identified and published more than 10 new-to-science species from the marine ecosystem of the Andaman Islands, bringing international recognition to island studies. This campus has cultivated a strong base in Marine Biology and related sciences, offering opportunities for deep-sea studies and other research. The Andamans’ unique environment, with sandy shores, mangroves, and rocky areas, provides a suitable location for these studies
